Minimum specifications

When considering a computer donation, think about its intended use. Because of the time and effort required to install and configure a donated computer, it needs to have a useful service life once it reaches an African school.

For this reason, while we can use most equipment that is considered out of date in the UK, we do have a responsibility to set a limit on what we can and can't take.

At present, Computers 4 Africa will not accept any equipment that is not working, incomplete or more than 5 years old. In addition;

  • Computers and laptops must have at least 256Mb of RAM and 20Gb of hard drive storage space.
  • Laptops must be supplied complete with a working compatible power supply unit (including cables).
  • Any peripherals (monitors, mice, keyboards etc) must be supplied with any data leads and/or power leads they need in order to operate.
  • In addition, printers must be supplied with ink or toner as applicable and have replacement parts and supplies available to buy. CRT monitors (old-style, bulky screens) must not have a screen size of more than 17" .

Terms & Conditions for Donating Equipment to Computers 4 Africa

Maidstone, 23/02/2009

All equipment donated to Computers 4 Africa must comply with our minimum specifications (current details available on our website). Computers 4 Africa reserves the right to change the minimum specification at any time.

Any computer donated to Computers 4 Africa must have all components necessary to function, including hard drive, RAM, network card and in the case of laptops, a working power supply & lead.

We would ask that you send any relevant drivers for donated equipment (on disk or CD) so that we are able to configure the equipment in the shortest time possible. We have limited resources to track down drivers but we don't want to scrap working equipment just because we don't have the drivers for it.

  • If you cannot arrange delivery of your donation to one of our appeal sites on an appeal day, or otherwise to our Maidstone office or our Aylesford warehouse, then we may be able to arrange to collect it from you. All collections are arranged at the sole discretion of Computers 4 Africa staff. However, we are more likely to be able to authorise a collection if one or more of the following conditions are satisfied:
  • If you are close to an appeal site and the equipment consists of 5 or more items that are available to be collected on an appeal day at that site
  • If you are in the South-East of England (including Kent and most of London) and have 10 or more PCs to donate
  • If you are elsewhere in the UK and have 20 or more PCs to donate

A donation is offered towards the cost of the collection.

By completing our online donor form you are confirming that the equipment you are offering for donation meets all of the relevant standards as laid out in our minimum specification, that it is complete and in full working order.

All hard drives in PCs donated to Computers 4 Africa undergo a secure data erase to an internationally recognised standard as part of our testing procedure. Where the data erase fails to complete for whatever reason, the hard drive will be removed from the computer and its data surface destroyed.

A written certificate of data destruction is available on request for all hard drives in donated PCs, though Computers 4 Africa may charge a small administration fee for this service.

Some computers may be sold in Africa in order to help fund Computers 4 Africa's projects. If you do not want your donation to be used in this way, please let us know (if you.re using the online form, mention it in the comments field below your donation offer).
